Sustainability & Green Building

For today’s Europe, green building represents one of the most significant and exciting opportunities for sustainable growth on both a national and a global scale.  The design of our built environment impacts us all, as well as our economies and the natural environment, and Green Building Councils are driving its transformation towards sustainability.

BREEAM

BREEAM is the longest established environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings, with 250,000 buildings with certified BREEAM assessment ratings and over a million registered for assessment since it was first launched in 1990. It was developed by the Building Research Establishment. There are well over twenty certified BREEAM projects in Ireland. BREEAM has been used on a range of building types including offices, industrial buildings, healthcare and education facilities for both the private and public sector. It is the system currently most closely aligned with Irish Building standards and probably the easiest to immediately apply to Irish Projects.

LEED

LEED has been growing in popularity in Ireland over the past number of years particularly amongst US companies based here. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is changing the way we think about how buildings and communities are planned, constructed, maintained and operated. Leaders around the world have made LEED the most widely used third-party verification for green buildings, with around 1.85 million square feet being certified daily.LEED works for all buildings—from homes to company headquarters—at all phases of development. Projects pursuing LEED certification earn points across several areas that address sustainability issues. Based on the number of points achieved, a project then receives one of four LEED rating levels: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.LEED-certified buildings are resource efficient. They use less water and energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As an added bonus, they save money. The Irish Green Building Council is part of the International LEED round table. This develops alternative compliance paths for LEED for use in Europe and the regional priority credits.Crown Roofing have been involved with many LEED and BREEAM projects.
